The musical's original Broadway production opened on August 15, 2002[2] and won eight Tony Awards out of thirteen nominations. It ran for over 2,500 performances and closed on January 4, 2009.[3] Hairspray has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions and was adapted as a 2007 musical film. The London production was nominated for a record-setting eleven Laurence Olivier Awards, winning for Best New Musical and in three other categories.

'Hairspray' is the story of a girl called Tracey who has a passion for dancing. The chance of a life time comes along to be on the Corny Collins show and she is dsperate to audition. She cuts school and goes to the audition with her friend, however, is told that she is too big to be on the show. Linc, who is the male lead in the show, sees something in Tracey and wants her to dance in the show. Nigro day is a day which happens once a year on the show, however, Tracey believes that everyday should be Nigro day so she does not give up and she pretests with them; this gets her into trouble with the police but she does not care. Tracey ends up on the show and with help from a few people she makes everyday become Nigro day so everyone dances together.
